The first Actos trial is still ongoing, and witness testimony is shedding new light on the lengths to which manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceuticals has gone in its effort to deceive the public. Bloomberg reports that according to 2005 company emails, Takeda officials openly emphasized protecting the product rather than its users. The bombshell was dropped by Howard Greenberg, a clinical pharmacologist, who testified this week.
“There are multiple e-mails from different levels of Takeda management that indicate the product came first,” Greenberg told jurors. Actos is used for the treatment and management of diabetes, but several independent studies have liked the drug to an increased risk of bladder cancer. In fact, some countries – namely Germany and France – have banned the drug altogether in light of the bladder cancer link.
The ongoing case involves Jack Cooper, a retired Pacific Bell worker who was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2011, after taking Actos for 4 years. Cooper and his legal team allege that Takeda marketed the drug while fully aware of the risks, and went so far as to conceal the risks from the public. Takeda counters that Cooper’s history as a smoker and gender placed him at an elevated risk of contracting the disease.
Takeda can defect blame all they want, but facts are facts. The link between Actos and bladder cancer is very strong. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has acknowledged the link, and independent studies have confirmed it. If you currently take Actos to treat your diabetes, discuss your options with your doctor. If you experience any pain or discomfort during urination, or if you have difficulty urinating, visit your doctor at once.
