Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the company behind the troubled diabetes drug Actos, has just received FDA approval for a new diabetes medication that uses the active ingredient alogliptin. Actos has been the subject of tremendous controversy as a result of numerous studies and thousands of lawsuits alleging severe side effects like heart failure and bladder cancer.
The drug is called Nesina, and is a DPP-4 inhibitor. So far, the most common side effects associated with Nesina are stuffy nose, runny nose, headache, and upper respiratory tract infection, but more research is still needed. There are already drugs with this active ingredient on the market, so Takeda will face some stiff competition as it attempts to restore its reputation and recover the lost revenue from Actos sales.
Approximately 24 million people live with type 2 diabetes, and the condition accounts for more than 90 percent of diabetes cases in the United States. Clearly we need an effective drug to manage the condition, but time will only tell if Nesina proves to be a positive alternative to Actos. While the new drug has fared very positively in its initial clinical trials, we have seen time and time again that the real side effects often don’t present themselves until the drug is introduced into the general population, and millions of people being relying on the drug to regulate their conditions.
The drug defect attorneys at Nadrich and Cohen LLP have been observing Takeda Pharmaceuticals and the impacts of Actos drug use for years. We will continue to monitor any developments as Nesina enters the market. We sincerely hope that Nesina proves to be a safe and effective alternative to Actos, but only time will tell.
